Jag, Landy to recall 11 852 cars

BEIJING, China - Jaguar Land Rover, a unit of India's largest automobile company Tata, is recalling 11 852 vehicles in China over possible engine and oil leakage problems, China's quality watchdog said.

China is the world's biggest auto market and is expected to overtake the US for sales of high-end producers such as Jaguar Land Rover with annual sales of 2.7-million luxury by 2020.

'EXORBITANT PROFITS'

Tuesday's (Aug 13 2013) announcement came a week after the Chinese joint venture with BMW said it would recall 143 215 vehicles there.

The Xinhua news agency also said in July 2013 that foreign producers were reaping exorbitant profits from imported luxury cars and should face an anti-trust investigation, a report seen as a possible shot across the bows of foreign firms.

Jaguar Land Rover will recall 3196 Jaguar XF models made between July 2012 and May 2013 and XJ units produced between March 2012 and May 2013 due to potential engine problems, China's general administration of quality supervision, inspection and quarantine said in a statement on its website.

8656 Land Rover Freelander 2 and Range Rover Aurora units assembled between January 2012 and June 2013 will also be recalled due to possible oil leakage.

Jaguar Land Rover said in an emailed response: "The company's technical field reporting team was made aware of a limited number of incidents involving fuel leaks from the affected engine. After a thorough and detailed engineering investigation Jaguar Land Rover has taken the decision to voluntarily recall all potentially affected vehicles."

Wheels24 is waiting for a reply from Jaguar Land Rover SA to answer whether the recall affects South Africa in any way.
