Cape Town - Toyota says it has stopped production of its popular Tazz, which became a South African motoring icon.
According to Toyota the Tazz has reached the end of its lifecycle after about 10 years of production.
The last unit came off the assembly line at Toyota South Africa's facility at Prospecton, near Durban, at 11:30 on July 5.
When Toyota launched the Tazz brand here in 1996 it was the successor of the 1300 Conquest, which originally went on sale in 1986.
The launch price of the Tazz in 1996 was R35 905 and a decade later it retailed for R74 706. However, it was still one of the least expensive cars here in 2006.
Total Tazz sales to date amounted to more than 200 000 units.
Since its introduction the Tazz was in a fierce battle with VW's ageing Citi Golf - a spin-off of the original Golf. VW has no immediate plans to cease production of the Citi Golf.
