VIENNA, Austria - Swiss watchmaking giant Swatch plans to become one of the world's leading producers of advanced batteries and to develop a power cell for vehicles in three to four years.

Chief executive Nick Hayek said Swatch subsidiary Belenos Clean Power had developed a battery whose storage capacity was 50 to 100% higher than other products on the market, he told the Swiss L'Hebdo magazine, which received wide publicity in Switzerland.

The battery will consist of small cells that can be arranged in various shapes.

Hayek added: "One of the great strengths of the Swatch Group is its mastery of electronic elements of very small dimensions."

Swatch, the world's most prolific watchmaker, does not intend to develop its own electric car, he added, alluding to the group's experience with developing the Smart car, which was eventually taken over by Daimler.

Swatch plans also to market its battery technology to other industries.
