JOHANNESBURG - The number of new cars sold in South Africa increased in the first quarter of 2013.
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) reported the total new-car sales as 113 971, which is 3286 (3%) more than in the same period in 2012.
Aggregate commercial vehicle sales were 49 292, up by 3304 (7.2%).
INCREASING SALES
From the last quarter in 2012 (December 31) to the end of first quarter (March 31) of 2013 car sales grew by 2.4%, light commercials by 9.6% and medium commercial vehicles by 6.4%. Heavy commercial sales, however, decreased by 5.8%.
A year from March 31, 2012 until the same time in 2013 saw new-car sales grow by 3%, light commercials by 8.1% and medium commercials by 6.1%. Sales of heavy commercial sales also shrank in this period but by only 1.1%
Naamsa summed up the position: "With the exception of the heavy commercial sector, all sectors registered gains during the first quarter of 2013 over the corresponding quarter in 2012."
