STUTTGART, Germany - Porsche is investing the equivalent of R R4.4-billion to double the size of its primary Zuffenhausen factory in Stuttgart, Germany.

The expansion will include an engine plant, a high-tech training centre and offices. Construction will be completed in 2016.

The announcement follows a statement in 2013 by Porsche chief Matthias Mueller that the company would spend half a billion euros (about R7bn) on remodelling Zuffenhausen and boosting the nearby Wiessach Porsche Engineering development centre.

Porsche recently opened a plant in the eastern city of Leipzig where production of its Macan SUV, a compact version of the Cayenne, has started.

About 8200 people work at Zuffenhausen, up by 3000 since 2010. About 200 cars a day are produced at the site.

Porsche employs (March 2014) 18 882 people and plans to increase the workforce to around 20 000.
