DETROIT, Michigan - Chevrolet, its 100th birthday behind it, is about to set a global annual sales record with 4.8-million units delivered through the end of November.
The bow-tie brand's global market share, according to its marketing manager for mid-sized and performance cars Russ Clark, has grown by nearly 0.5% through 2011.
NINE A MINUTE
About 60% of Chevrolet product is now sold outside the US, the primary market for parent General Motors for most of the past century. Only in 2011 did Chevrolet began selling cars in South Korea and Vietnam.
"A Chevrolet is sold somewhere in the world every 6.6 seconds," Clark added, thanks to China, Russia, Uzbekistan and India now being among its markets. And one in five Chevrolets are sold in Latin America, where it is the No.1 brand with a market share of 18.7 percent.
Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Columbia are all now important markets for Chevrolet's cars, bakkies and SUV's.
Despite GM's push to make Chevrolet a truly global brand alongside Ford, Toyota and VW it is still No.2 in the US with 13.7% of the market. Ford is No.1 but Chevrolet is set to make December 2011 its 16th month of sales growth.
CRUZE TOP-SELLER
The Chevrolet Cruze is the best-selling compact car in the US. The Corvette and Camaro (the latter out-sellling Ford's Mustang for a second consecutive year) are now top in their respective segments, Clark said. The new Sonic (just launched in South Africa) is selling so fast that dealers have only a 17-day supply.
The Malibu, the longest longest-running Chevrolet model, has been completely revamped for 2012 to make it more competitive in the hotly contested mid-sized segment. It will challenge Toyota 's Camry, Honda's Accord and the new VW Passat.
