Tim Abbott, managing director of BMW SA, said: “We congratulate the four dealers. Due to the nature of BMW i target groups and product characteristics, we believe demand is likely to be in urban areas, specifically for the BMW i3.
"So, we're initially focusing our sales and marketing activities on regions with the strongest demand.”
BMW i DEALERS
The dealers that will sell and service the i3 and i8:
Club Motors Fountains, Pretoria
Sandton Auto, Johannesburg
SMG, Cape Town
Supertech, Durban
Abbott added: “Activities could be extended at any time to other regions and BMW i sales partners should demand increase of demand distribution change. While we will launch BMW i with four dealers, we plan to install a fifth immediately afte launch in 2015.”
BMW says its four i dealers will service and repair the new models under the basic and high-voltage service formats only. All body repairs covering aluminium and carbon-fibre components will be done at the automaker's vehicle distribution centre in Rosslyn, Pretoria.
BMW i WALLBOX
The announcement of the dealers follows BMW's 2014 partnership with Schneider Electric, an international expert in electrical mobility, to install home-charging BMW i WallBoxes.
The partnership agreement includes checking the electrical installation in customers’ homes, supplying and assembling the charging point, their maintenance and other services for BMW i vehicles. "This will allow future owners of a BMW i3 or BMW i8 to hook up their vehicles safely and quickly re-charge at home or office."
The WallBoxes start at R25 000, including installation, though price can vary depending on the location and, BMW says, "layout of the required space and existing electrical infrastructure at the customer’s home which will be decided after an inspection from Schneider Electric".
