Diesel has been through a rapid loss of reputation in recent years yet in years past, it was often used in exciting automotive projects.
Perhaps its prominent and most successful project is the dominance in the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the likes of Audi and Peugeot clinched victory in successive races.
Not yet a dying breed
These days, small capacity petrol engines with a turbocharger slapped onto it seems to be the way forward, although diesel power is still very much popular with bakkies.

Its very rare to find a performance powered diesel at present with the last probable example coming from Volkswagen with the Golf GTD.
More emphasis is being placed on greener driving and electric technology so while it is not an entirely dying breed, diesels will still continue to be there.
