It’s not uncommon for both men and women to forego their sports car when a new baby comes along. You’d be hard-pressed to find people who retain their sports car instead of purchasing something a bit more practical.
In partnership with Parent24, Wheels24 set about finding out whether or not you can fit a baby seat in to a Ford Mustang Convertible. The Mustang is South Africa’s best-selling sports car and, although it has seating for four, just how practical is it for a baby?
With the roof down and the driver seat moved in its most-forward position, we proceeded to fit the baby seat. Much to our shock (and horror), things did not go as planned.
Each car/baby seat is unique in design, catering to the various vehicles on the market. As a parent or prospective buyer, it is up to you to do the research and, in so doing, purchase the correct seat.
Sports car or family-friendly vehicle?
Ultimately, the big question remains: do you forego your sports car, or can you keep it?
We believe that it is possible for you to keep your sports car or convertible. When a baby arrives, it does come with its own set of challenges that has the potential to throw your life in disarray - or not. Thankfully, the world has evolved to such an extent where your likes and preferences do not have to take a backseat. Excuse the pun.
But, you to be familiar with the challenges a family might face with a sports car in the garage, versus a more family-friendly choice. Yes, a Ford Mustang or something similar might fit the bill, but they are not ideal choices. Who knows, maybe if you have the right baby seat…

Wheels24 editor Janine van der Post says: "Having my toddler strapped into her car seat is imperative and we won't drive off unless she is buckled up. Because I test drive various vehicles often, we have to swap out her seat daily. However, because our cars are older models, they don't come with Isofix fittings while almost all new cars in the market are equipped with standard fittings.
"I drive anything from bakkies, tiny city-cars, or big SUVs, and sometimes a very sporty vehicle. Regardless of the car we are driving, her car seat can fit into any vehicle as it is easy enough to secure the seat and strap her in without the Isofix points. It's tedious and time consuming weaving the seat belt through the seat and then buckling her growing body up with the belt, but her safety is important and there's no compromise on that."
