Cape Town - Many families will be taking to the roads for the festive season, along with their little ones.

Parents will know that if the journey becomes too long, children can get restless and impatient. And what follows are tempers flaring, in-car fighting, parents screaming, and someone being upset saying "I don't want to go anymore! Take me home!"

But nowadays with smartphones, tablets and television screens in cars, parents can minimise road trip frustrations.

One of these ways are to put on a movie or two for the duration of the trip. And even though the movie might not last the full length of the journey, it can be helpful in keeping children occupied and perhaps even put them to sleep.

Here are five movies that are ideally suited for the little ones:

1. Herbie Fully Loaded (2005)

Maggie, played by troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, is off to college, but she needs a car for her next adventure. She goes to a scrapyard and sees a Volkswagen Beetle. She then learns the bug's name is Herbie and she visits her friend and mechanic Kevin for him to see the car. Herbie comes to life and takes Maggie on a wild adventure, but not as wild as Lohan's life after the film. The movie offers great family entertainment.

2. Cars 1 and 2 (2006 and 2011)

Who can forget Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater? Since the first Cars movie hit screens in 2006, the movie franchise has been nothing but a booming success for Pixar. Young and old found a liking to the movie. So popular was the first movie that Pixar released Cars 2 in 2011 and that proved to be just as successful. This is by far one of the best animated car movies ever made! Pixar is already working on a third installment.

3. Speed Racer (2008)

Speed Racer, played by Emile Hirsch, is a hot shot racer, born into a family that lives for racing. His speed and talent is so amazing that he always beats the field, taking more victories than losses.

But the movie takes a turn when Racer turns down an offer from the head of Royalton Industries. He then also discovers a dark secret: races are fixed to boost profits! In an attempt to beat the bad guy, Speed partakes in the same race that killed his brother...

4. Redline (2009)

In this Japanese film, a daredevil driver falls for the charm of an alluring woman as he tries to win a race that occurs only once every five years.

5. Turbo (2013)

Wanting to live out his dream as a racer, Turbo always competes in snail races with other snails. Until one day a freak accident gets him sucked into the turbo of a car, leaving him with, well... the ability to turbo. He soon gets noticed and is entered into the Indianapolis 500, where he competes against real (animated) cars and drivers.
