Hijackings continue to be a major scourge on South African roads.

More than 1400 vehicles are hijacked each month in South Africa, according to South African Police Service's (SAPS) crime statistics for 2016. 

Norman Sekhukhune, SAPS Head of Crime Research and Statistics, reported that carjackings increased by 14.9% which equates to 1415 vehicles hijacked each month.

We asked readers whether they've witnessed or been the victim of hijacking in South Africa and our poll garnered 15 472 votes.

While the majority of the respondents said they've never experienced a hijacking, 18% (2750) of respondents said they had been victims of hijackers.

Incredibly, more than 1000 said that they managed to fend off criminals attempting to hijack their vehicle.
