In the market for a new family car? Want a safe vehicle for your child? We take a look at some of the safest budget cars in South Africa.

Earlier in 2019, motor vehicle safety body Euro NCAP published the safety ratings of several new vehicles, including the Toyota Corolla Hatch, which was launched in South Africa a few months ago. It achieved the maximum five-star rating against the latest test requirements.

Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP, says: "It is encouraging to see that all manufacturers did well, regardless of type of powertrain or class of vehicle tested. New cars on the market continue to offer more advanced technology as standard, systems that were not even considered an option a few years ago."

Watch how the Corolla Hatch fared:

The 2019 AA Entry-Level Vehicle Safety (ELVS) Report that assesses safety features on entry-level vehicles shows there have been improvements to the safety of these vehicles, but that more can and must be done in this market.

The 2019 list, the third instalment of the AA report, considered the safety features of 27 vehicles available in South Africa currently priced under R180 000. This is 12.5% increase from the threshold in the previous report to account for an increase in inflation.

The ELVS Report is the result of desktop research, and specifically assesses safety features only. It does not consider the structural integrity of the driver/passenger compartment.

The 27 vehicles are then categorised into three groups based on their safety ratings, according to the AA survey.

These cars are noted for having either:

• Acceptable Safety

• Moderate Safety

• Poor Safety

Of the 27 vehicles assessed, seven vehicles are categorised in the “Acceptable Safety” range – a marked improvement on the previous report which only had two vehicles in this category. Sixteen of the vehicles are ranked in the "Moderate Safety" class, while four vehicles are classed as having "Poor Safety".
