Many rare and classic cars went under the hammer at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance auction.

Monterey, California plays host to some of the most high-valued and revered cars from different eras as wealthy car-enthusiasts spend millions to own a piece of automotive history.

No small change

According to RM Sotheby's, a rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO SI Coupe sold for an eye-watering $48 405 000 (R685-million) became the most expensive purchase and the most valuable car ever sold at auction.
