Cape Town - South Africa's car sales improve, Toyota's Hilux reclaims the local bakkie throne and another Ford Kuga was spotted ablaze... the first few days of August 2017 has already produced many great motoring stories.

A Ford Kuga was spotted ablaze in Gauteng as the automaker rolled out 'phase 2' of its global SUV recall plan.

SA car sales

The local auto industry saw a minor improvement in overall sales but the biggest highlight lies with exports; 35 486 vehicles, an increase of 6456 units or 22.2% compared to the 29 030 vehicles exported in July last year.

The all-new Land Rover Discovery was launched in SA early in July 2017 and already, the 4x4 has made huge impact in the luxury SUV market. Toyota may have trailed the Ford in bakkie sales but in July the Hilux has made triumphant return to the top, out-selling the Ranger by 800 units.

On a lighter note, we featured a cool campaign by Mercedes-Benz which sees fans and celebrities perform their best "AMG engine" impression as the automaker celebrates 50 years of its performance AMG division.
