Defensive driving: SA celebs team with BMW at Zwartkops

accreditation

Pretoria - To raise awareness around road deaths ahead of the festive season, BMW Driving Experience held an event at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria West this week to teach attendees advanced driving skills.

Driving a BMW M3 – accompanied by a certified instructor – was a mind-blowing experience.

The day started with a gourmet breakfast of small pastries, coffee, juice and almost every other breakfast component one could desire.

Celebrities who joined the event included actress Zuraida Jardine, 5FM presenter Kyle Cassim, actress and TV presenter Amanda Du-Pont, and Top Billing presenter Ayanda Thabethe.

Once we were done with our meet and greet, we got down to business and headed for the racetrack.

There were some not-to-be-missed driving moments around the track, which is good news for speed freaks and adrenaline junkies. The cars were extremely powerful and exceeded speeds of 170km/h.

Despite the speed, you feel completely safe as the instructor guides you through the moves.

The instructors were emphatic on matters of safety. They listed numerous safety tips and left nothing to chance, and even explained how to sit in your car to brake properly.

A shocking demonstration of a car’s braking distance was performed. This really makes you realise how important following distance is when you are driving your car on the road.

The skidpan was the final and most fun part of the course. We were allowed to practice our drifting and braking skills using the pristine BMW 340i. Although terrifying for some, this experience was exciting and it will definitely stick with me.

“One understands the risks of texting while driving much better after this course. Also, the driving was really exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone,” a participant told City Press.

All in all, the experience was amazing and I would recommend the course to everyone, despite its hefty price tag.
