Workers and management celebrate the milestone along the Golf 5 production line.

Launched in 1978, the first generation Volkswagen Golf quickly became one a favourite in SA.

When the Jumbo Golf II was launched in 1984, the popularity of the original Golf 1 was such that it was retained but renamed the Citi Golf, which is still in production today and continues to be one of South Africa's favourites.

The next two generations were launched in 1992 (Golf 3) and 1999 (Golf 4), respectively.

The latest version, Golf 5, launched to wide acclaim in 2004, is currently one of the top sellers in the compact hatch segment.

About a quarter of the 800 000 Golfs have been exported to overseas markets
