George's Corvette 'home' after 33 years

DETROIT, Michigan – George Talley and his prized 1979 Chevrolet Corvette were reunited at General Motors' world headquarters here on July 2 2014. Reunited? Yep, and only five kilometres from where the car was stolen... 33 years earlier.

Talley, 71, last saw his Corvette when it was parked on Jefferson Avenue in 1981. On June 13 2014, more than three decades later, Talley received a call from the American Automobile Association to tell him his car had turned up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Talley said: "It was a lucky day to hear that my car had been found. They told me it was running, had 75 600km on the clock and was ready for me to pick up!"

SPECIAL STORY

He's been  a Corvette fan since he saw his neighbour's first-generation 'Vette in the 1950’s and was fortunate to own three more but the '79 was always his favourite.

Talley's luck continued when Mark Reuss, executive vice-president for GM Product Development, heard his story on the news and offered to ship the car home to Detroit. Michigan.

Reuss said: "George's story brought a smile to my face. As a long-time Corvette owner myself, I know the passion the car inspires. I also knew that car belonged home in Detroit, with its rightful owner, and that we could make that happen."
