The first production version of Range Rover’s Evoque has been driven off the line at Land Rover’s plant in Liverpool, north-west England.
Around 18 000 orders have already been placed but this the first model will be donated to the British Motor Industry Heritage trust.
Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover's chief executive officer, said: "It is a ground-breaking product with concept-car looks and light-weight technologies.
SMALLER, LIGHTER
"At the same time it’s still a true Range Rover - agile, nimble, designed to survive in the urban jungle and capable of tackling the toughest climates and terrains thanks to Land Rover’s legendary all-wheel drive expertise."
The Evoque, Based on the LRX concept, has already sparked controversy as the first model bearing a Land Rover badge that will be sold with front-wheel drive.
The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of 40 product launches that Jaguar and Land Rover (including Range Rover) will carry out through the next five years.
The Evoque will be sold in 160 countries - including South Africa - from November 1, 2011. Interested South Africans can order their Evoques through their local dealers. Jaguar Land Rover SA would not say how many Evoque orders have so far been received from South Africa.
