The thought of a BMW Z4 with an M3-sourced powerplant is a nice idea, but don't get too excited by this Z4 GT3...
It is, strictly speaking, not for public consumption, but rather a hardcore racing machine prepared by BMW Motorsport for its customer racing programme.
And while it will have to remain a vision until BMW Motorsport releases images, the division has revealed some details of the sportier hardtop roadster on its website.
The latest offering from BMW Motorsport is built in line with GT3 regulations to allow it to compete in a host of championships including the FIA GT3 European Championship and 24-hour endurance races.
The Z4 GT3 is powered by a 358-kW version of the 4.0-litre V8 engine currrently reserved for the latest M3 variants. Its engine and electronics are controlled by a raft of electronic gadgetry, while drive to the rear wheels is via a special six-speed sequential gearbox.
In line with its more demanding exploits, the Z4 GT3 has racing ABS, optional air conditioning and rims with locking safety clips.
The track-friendly Z4 becomes available from the second quarter of 2010 for around 298 000 euros.
