WC death toll up, cyclists spared

Cape Town - Robin Carlisle, MEC for transport and public works in the Western Cape, has released road fatality statistics for April 2012.

"The total number of deaths on our roads over April 2012 is 107, five more than the 102 of 2011," he said, attributing the increase to the two long weekends during the month.

Carlisle added that the report showed that more drivers, motorcyclists, passengers and pedestrians were killed in 2012.

"Forensic pathology statistics show that for the first time since 2008, not a single cyclist died."

DEATHS DURING HOLIDAYS

According to the statistics, compared to the same period (January - April) over the past five years, road deaths are decreasing.

Carlise added: "What these numbers tell us is that while fatalities are dropping overall, holiday periods remain the most dangerous times of the year to be on the roads."

The overall tally of deaths on the province's roads since January are 402:
January - 104 (109 over the same period in 2011)
February - 99 (129 in 2011)
March - 92 (147 in 2011)
April - 107 (102 in 2011)
