Voting booth: SA Car of the Year

2011-12-05 12:49

A readers' poll by Wheels24 about which vehicle should be the 2012 South African Car of the Year has so far attracted a whopping 11 000 votes - one  of our most successful polls yet.

Before the poll, we reported on the 10 SA Guild of Motoring Journalists' finalists for the South Africa's Car of the Year nominees and linked readers to Wheels24 articles about the cars. To date we have received nearly 11 000 votes.

For the first few weeks of our poll the new Hyundai new Elantra dominate the voting with 2310 votes. Then the Ford Focus inched it's way up in popularity to the top of our CoTY poll with 2506 votes.

Perhaps surprisingly Alfa Romeo Giulietta's has claimed third place with 1458 votes, just a head of Volkswagen's Jetta in fourth with 1393 votes.

The fifth most popular vehicle in our poll is Audi's A6 (914 votes) followed by the  Mercedes-Benz SLK (686 votes) and Suzuki's Kizashi in sixth and seventh place respectively.

How it all pans out after the guild judges do their job early in 2012 remains to be seen - but the public, apparently, has a very strong view on the subject. Will the "experts" overrule our readers? We'll see!

Why cant these Fords lead on sales as well?

      Pieter - 2011-12-06 16:10

The problem with ford is the name. A lot of SA do not like ford because of its image coming from the past. Ford must price there products at least 15% cheeper than a Toyota competitor to regain market and to get South Africans to buy Ford again. If I look at myself I would rather buy a Toyota for lots more before buying a Ford.

... because in South Africa we do not have German Fords... where are the pretty Mondeo, the cute Ka, the pratical C and S Max, the Galaxy, the Transit, the Transit connect???!

I had a look at the euro car of the year site no winner as yet for 2012 and the Nissan Leaf is the current car of the year for 2011?

      Vickers - 2011-12-11 16:14

In your dreams? Where did you find that? The winner is yet to be announced. Sheez you must think South-Africans are stupid. We do know how to use Google. From the official European Car of the year site: "The first one will produce a short list of seven nominees, which will be announced on 9 January 2012. The second round will find the single winner that will be made known on 5 March 2012."
