Skoda blitzes 320km/h

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Skoda, once regarded as the laughing stock of the motoring world, produced a car that hit 323km/h at the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah, USA on August 14, 2011.

The car reached 307km/h on the second day of the festival.

The Czech automaker spent six months creating the modified Octavia vRS, which was put through its paces by Richard Meaden.

The car’s two-litre TSI engine was fitted with a turbocharger that boosted power from 149kW to 373kW, making it more powerful than a Porsche 911.

Meaden reported wheelspin at 241km/h.

347KM/H RECORD LINED UP

The car was modified aerodynamically with a reduced ride height, has a sub-frame for an intercooler and uses high-octane racing fuel.

Skoda UK director Robert Hazelwood was overjoyed by the car’s efforts and congratulated the team on their hard work.

“Months of rigorous planning, testing and preparation have been worthwhile. The team has done an outstanding job. Our thanks go to Richard for an incredible drive.”

Their focus has shifted to breaking the two-litre production car record, which stands at 347km/h at the speed week, which ends on August 20.
