Renault is set to embark on a project to build an ultra-economical car costing the euro equivalent of R28 000, a French business newspaper has reported.

According to an article in La Tribune, a team at Renault-Nissan will on January 1, 2012 start developing several cheap cars for emerging markets but they could appear in the Euroopean market as well.

The cheapest will cost only a third as much as the Dacia Logan, a small family car assembled by Renault and its Romanian subsidiary Dacia. This car is badged Renault Logan for the South African market.

The project will be overseen by Gerard Detourbet, head of Renault's entry-level car division, La Tribune reported.

Renault confirmed to AFP that Detourbet would join a Renault-Nissan small-car team at the start of 2012 but would not comment on wether a 2500-euro car would be the team's focus.

If Renault can't build proper and reliable cars costing R150K and up, what will they be building with only R28 000.
