It seems Frankfurt (and its ongoing motor show) is not the current epicentre of all things motoring, after all. Hyundai chose to unveil its all-new Sonata quietly, in a Korean ceremony.
Although the company was quick to point out the model being shown was to its home market specifications, the refreshing design will be a global phenomenon and the new Sonata is expected to elevate the Hyundai brand even more with its younger, more dynamic, image.
In Korea, the car - now in its sixth generation - is launched with a new 2.0-litre engine that Hyundai assures delivers 11% better fuel economy. The new motor is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
From early 2010, a 2.4-litre powerplant will be added for global markets.
Safety has been beefed up too, with standard vehicle dynamic control and hill-start and brake assist features.
In Korea, a Mozen telematics system offers a range of multimedia and IT functions through its eight-inch screen and JBL sound system with its wireless connection.
The new Sonata is expected to arrive in South Africa by May 2010.
