Porsche readying road racer?

Is Porsche’s legendary Spyder heritage about to be revived with a road going version of the RS Spyder prototype racer? Well, rumours emanating from France would suggest so.

Although the RS Spyder has been in production since 2005, and is currently campaigned quite successful in the American LeMans series, rumours of a road going car are now gaining momentum.

As the most profitable manufacturer per car produced, Porsche is always keen to seize on a business opportunity, which has given credence to allegations of it readying a road going model of the RS Spyder racer.

It’s mooted to feature the same carbon-fibre chassis and 360kW 3.4l V8, powering the rear-wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox.

Considering the RS has a mass of only 775kg, performance should be formidable, even if Porsche adds some weight in the process of redesigning the car for road going homologation.

Though the 4.65m RS Spyder is 200mm longer than a 911, it’s only 2m wide and 1.10m tall, accommodating a driver only.

Potential customers would be frustrated racers and serious trackday addicts as a road going RS Spyder would present a very commited ownership experience.
