In a business decision that may grate brand purists Porsche will soon expand its diesel offering.
The company’s boss, Matthias Müller, has confirmed the success of Cayenne diesel has prompted Porsche to launch a diesel version of its second bestselling car (the Panamera) next year.
Although Müller would at this stage not confirm the exact turbodiesel engine configuration to be used in the compression ignition Panamera, it is widely expected to be the VW Group’s ubiquitous 3-litre V6 TDI.
Paired with an eight-speed transmission the new Panamera turbodiesel will in all probability be offered in all-wheel drive only, as all other VW Group models powered by the 3-litre TDI engine are either SUVs or Audis with quattro all-wheel drive.
Producing 176kW and 550Nm in the Cayenne application, the 3-litre V6 should endow Porsche’s Panamera with swift, albeit acoustically undistinguished, performance. The new turbodiesel Panamera will improve Porsche's fleet average fuel economy figures, an important issue in the current environmentally audited manufacturing scenario.
