Stylish and hot, the all-new Peugeot 308 GTi shows off its skills with 147 kW on tap and the requisite amount of thrills.
Available in five-door body style only, the beefier hatchback is said to be a concerted effort by Peugeot to create an athletic number that is as attuned to the humdrum of daily driving as it is to offering its drivers (and hapless passengers) real excitement.
In this case, excitement takes the form of a 1.6-litre THP engine using a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection, as well as VTI variable valve timing and lift mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
The hot hatch’s turbocharged mill generates 147 kW from 5 500 r/min to a grin-inducing 6 800 r/min, while maximum torque of 275 Nm comes alive between 1 700 and 4 500 r/min.
If you’re looking for any reassurance as to this powerplant’s capabilities, it may be useful to note that this 1.6 THP also adorns the engine bay of the breathtakingly beautiful RCZ Coupe.
In the 308 GTi however, the 1.6-litre turbo allows for fuel consumption figures of 6.9 l/100 km and a CO2 emission rating of 159 g/km, Peugeot claims.
As for comfort, pictures show this fiery Pug takes care of the hot hatch fan’s most immediate needs with a grippy leatherbound steering wheel and a fair bit of bolstering for the sport seats.
The Peugeot 308 GTi comes to South Africa in the fourth quarter of this year.
