Mazda has developed an advanced safety technology called Smart City Brake Support to help drivers avoid a frontal collision from low speeds, such as in commuter traffic.
The system will make its first appearance on the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV due to reach European showrooms in the next couple of months.
It uses a laser to detect a vehicle or other obstacle ahead and if the driver does not react appropriately the crash nanny will take over, brake and cut engine power.
FUTURE MODELS
When the car is moving at (see illustration) between walking speed and 30km/h a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen scans for obstacles and measures the gap and closing speed. If a collision is possible the program pre-pressures the brakes for the driver; if he fails to act the car will brake.
