MILAN, Italy - Italian carmaker Fiat has an Italian marketing offer that will enable Italians who buy a enw Fiat to pay only a euro a litre at participating petrol stations.
Italy currently has the highest petrol prices in Europe, costing an average of 1.83 euros/litre (about R20/litre).
Italian car sales are in the fifth year of a decline, falling from 2.49-million vehicles sold in 2007 to an expected 1.46-million in 2012.

Italy is Fiat's biggest market - 31.4% market share in April 2012. Car sales have fallen by 21% in the first three months of 2012 from the same period a year earlier.
The offer will be based on a calculation of the owner's potential driving distance, with effects that can last for up to three years, the report said.
