The shortlist is in, and while there are some upsets, expect a couple of these cars to appear in the local Car of the Year selection, too.
The seven finalists for European Car of the Year 2009 are: Alfa Romeo MiTo, Citroën C5, Ford Fiesta, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Renault Mégane, Škoda Superb and Volkswagen Golf.
Apart from the Opel and Škoda, all models are sold in SA, or on there way here within the next 12 months.
The European Car of the Year is elected by 59 motoring journalists representing 23 European countries.
The final result will be announced on November 17.
