A driver was arrested for driving into over 12 youths with his bakkie in George, Western Cape police.

The driver hit six boys and six girls, aged between 13 and 22, who were playing in the yard of a house on Mellford Notshokovu Street, reports police Captain Malcolm Pojie.

The man was chased by a traffic officer as it was suspected that he had been drinking.

Police, who were on patrol in the area, started chasing the driver and asked him to pull over. The driver hit the wall of the house where the 12 youths were playing.

All 12 were taken to hospital, with two youths had to have emergency operations, said Pojie.

The man is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on charges of negligent and reckless driving, drunken driving and driving without a licence.
