accreditation
Johannesburg - A motorist has been caught doing 257km/h on the N1 north, Johannesburg metro police say.

It was the highest speed reading for a motorist captured by police instruments in South Africa, spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said on Monday.

The motorist, driving a silver Audi TT, was one of seven speedsters trapped between the Grasmere toll gate and the Golden highway on Sunday night and Monday morning.

A red BMW was caught doing 197km/h; a silver Volvo S40 at 183km/h; a blue Toyota Corolla at 186km/h; a blue BMW 320 at 219km/h; another blue BMW at 198km/h and a silver Toyota Corolla was stopped doing 194km/h.

The previous highest reading was when police caught a red Lamborghini doing 251km/h on the N14 a few weeks ago.

All drivers were arrested and granted bail of R1 000.

They will appear in Johannesburg Magistrate's Court this week.
