'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'The Jetsons' and 'Harry Potter'... the idea of the flying car has been around for decades and has captivated inventors and filmmakers alike. 

Nobody enjoys sitting in traffic and when bogged down in rush-hour some of us might wish we could take to the sky to avoid the tedium of road congestion.

Many inventors and companies have been working on flying car prototypes and in the last few years, the technology has moved closer to moving motorists through the air.

Most recently, Aston Martin said it is planning to release a prototype of a 'sports car for the skies' within the next two years. The Kitty Hawk Flyer is another example of a flying car design.
