The intake and exhaust are probably one of the most important systems of a car; they're responsible for collecting air and expelling CO2 gasses.

Once air passes through the intake, it then has to pass through a series of valves in the cylinder head, regulated by the camshaft.

Honda's VTEC system, for example, keeps the intake valves open for longer, thus allowing more air into the engine and increasing performance.

In an exhaust system it is all about getting the gases out as quickly for a smooth distribution of power - even so much as tiny hole in the exhaust can hamper performance.
