Volkswagen allow us into the interior of its first fully electric SUV. The ID.4 will make its world premiere before the end of September with the first vehicles scheduled for delivery by the end of this year.

VW says the ID.4's interior shows off the spaciousness derived from the compact electric drive vehicle.

Klaus Zyciora, Head of Volkswagen Group Design encapsulates the interior in nine words: "freedom on the outside, free space on the inside." The ID.4 is underpinned by the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform which aids the spaciousness of the cabin.

There's a minimalist look and feel inside, with the door handles lying flush with the body and come with electric unlocking. Driver and passengers access the vehicle through large door openings and benefit from a high seating position. The luggage compartment already boasts a volume of 543 litres with the rear seat backrests in an upright position, according to the manufacturer.

To let in as much light as possible Volkswagen has a large, tilting panoramic sunroof made of glass (optional). At night the background lighting can be adjusted within a 30-colour spectrum to set striking highlights in the vehicle interior.

Another new introduction is that of the ID. Light, it is a light strip below the windscreen and it supports drivers in a host of situations with intuitive lighting effects in different colours.

The light signals to the driver that the vehicle's drive system is active and that the car has been unlocked or locked. It accentuates information issued by the driver assist and navigation systems, and signals braking prompts and incoming phone calls.

Working with the navigation system, the system helps to smoothly guide drivers through traffic: by blinking, it recommends a lane change and can also warn the driver if they are in the wrong lane.

As we know, car seats are very important. Volkswagen set out to make the front seats sporty and comfortable at the same time. In the ID.4 1ST Max1 limited edition model, the seats bear the seal of approval by the German Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR). They come with a number of electrical adjustment options, while their pneumatic lumbar supports have a built-in massage function.

Volkswagen says the materials underline the character of the feel-good lounge. The two future ID.4 limited edition models come with seat covers made from animal-free materials.
