First look: VW Golf VII

After a clay design model of the Golf 7 was unwittingly (or so it is claimed) leaked in a Volkswagen promotional video, a flurry of reports, spy shots and renderings have flooded the internet.

Our illustrations show how the new car is likely to look when it is revealed in 2012.

As expected from Volkswagen, styling for its bread-and-butter model will be evolutionary and mostly inoffensive. A sharper front profile and shapelier curves may be seen, while the car will also be longer and wider than the current Golf 6 it replaces.

But the all-new Golf 7 will, reportedly, save its most important adjustments for beneath the metal. It will apparently ride on a new, smaller platform and use lightweight body panels to keep the weight down.

A range of smaller-capacity forced induction engines will be offered, too, along with twin-clutch transmissions.
