Better baby BMW, 3-door here

accreditation
BMW's better 1 Series range has been released in South Africa while the three-door model is also now available.

There are minor changes to the car's exterior styling with a design update for the front lights, air intake, foglights, front and rear air damps and the kidney grille. The bumpers and taillights are also fresh.

BMW has also improved the interior fit and finish of the 1 Series.

The big news of course is the introduction of the three-door model, which is available as 130i, 120i and 118i derivatives.

The 130i model gets BMW's straight-six 3-litre petrol engine with double VANOS and VALVETRONIC. Maximum output is 195 kW with torque at 315 Nm, while average fuel consumption is 9.2 litres/100 km.

BMW claims a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 6.0 seconds and naturally top speed is limited to 250 km/h. (electronically limited), average fuel consumption to the EU standard 9.2 litres/100 km.

The 120 produces 115 kW, max torque 200 Nm with a fuel consumption figure of 7.9 litres/100 km.

Power for the 118i is 100 kW and torque is 180 Nm. According to BMW this model's fuel usage is 7.4 litres/100 km.

Five-door

The line-up for the five-door model is unchanged, however BMW has improved the 120d engine.

It now has more power and better fuel consumption thanks to modifications on the combustion chambers, in the air guidance system, the turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, and common-rail fuel injection.

The aluminium crankcase, in turn, helps to significantly reduce the overall weight of the engine.

This four-cylinder diesel develops maximum output of 125 kW and peak torque of 340 Nm. This is an iincrease in power and torque by 10 kW and 10 Nm respectively, ensures acceleration to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

Average fuel consumption under the EU standard is down to 5.5 litres for 100 kilometres.

All BMW 1 Series models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox with six-speed automatic transmission including a Steptronic function as an option.

Active steering is available on the 130i and 120d derivatives.
