As the festive season gets under way, South Africans take to the road and true to its name everything gets a bit silly during this season. The tally of deaths at the end of January the next year is often staggering and besides intoxicated drivers being a danger the issues of vehicle road safety also come into play.
More than 900 people were killed on South Africa's roads during December 2011, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
SILLY SEASON
The National Vehicle Testing Association and participating vehicle testing stations - municipal and private - have created a free national safety check campaign (excluding Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State and PE/EL) that will run until December 15, 2012 ahead of the Christmas holiday frenzy.
In the absence of a compulsory periodic vehicle-testing regime, the Retail Motor Industry Organisation strongly advocates regular maintenance and servicing as well as frequent checking, of motor vehicle components.
This is in line with its support of the Department of Transport’s Decade of Action Campaign which seeks to halve road deaths over the next 10 years.
Research conducted by the RMI indicates that the causes of major fatal accidents can frequently be attributed directly to safety-critical component failure. Alarmingly, in the previous free safety check campaign performed by NVTA an 82% failure rate for inspected vehicles was documented.
This year’s national campaign is a safety-critical check and not a roadworthy evaluation and concerns:
