Ford keeping an eye on the cops

NEW YORK – Police could get some extra back-up from their cars as Ford’s new surveillance system sounds an alarm, locks the doors and rolls up the windows if it detects someone approaching from behind.

Marc Ellison, vice-president of operations at InterMotiv, said: "It’s like insurance. You hope you never need it but if you do it gives the officer a few extra seconds of warning."

AN EYE ON YOUR SIX

Cameras and sensors usually only work when a car is in reverse. The new system, “Surveillance Mode,” is used while a vehicle is parked. An image from the reversing camera appears in the rear-view mirror so the officer can keep an eye on the rear of the car. If somebody comes too close four sensors on the rear bumper will detect them.

"It can be turned off if officers are in high traffic areas with a lot of pedestrians."

InterMotive sells Surveillance Mode for the equivalent of about R2400 - or R700 when part of an optiopns package which includes a cabin-light dimmer if the officer doesn’t want to be seen and turns down his personal radio.

Steve Groeninger, spokesman for the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Fund, said: “Nobody keeps track of the number of police officers killed each year in their car but it’s not uncommon for criminals to target them there.”
