DETROIT, Michigan - What was once a Mazda that was going to be an Alfa Romeo is now a Mazda that's going to be a Fiat.
Wheels24's American spysters captured images of Fiat's next roadster, the 124 Spider, undergoing testing in Detroit, Michigan.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 platform will be the platform for the revival of the 124 Spider name, last seen on a wildly popular Fiat roadster in the 1970's.
FIAT 500 ENGINE
The automaker hopes its new roadster will provide its US dealers a flash new product - for which they have a desperate need.
Despite its Mazda roots, the 124 Spider will be powered by four-cylinder 1.4 turbo engine borrowed from the Fiat 500 variant and Dodge Dart.
The engine can be mated to a either six-speed manual or auto.

Not much is known about what the car will look like, given that it was originally announced in 2012 as an Alfa Romeo, but Fiat swears it's not just slapping a new badge on a MX-5.
Expect style cues derived from the 500 family or even something reminiscent of the 1986 124 Spider styled by Sergio Pininfarina.
Expect the 124 Spider to be shown later in 2015, possibly at the Los Angeles auto show in November.
