Toyota's 1.5-litre engine plans

2008-03-26 07:35
Tokyo - Toyota plans to build a plant in Japan to meet growing global demand for engines for compact cars, a source familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

Toyota, Japan's largest carmaker, aims to start the operation of the plant, planned to be built in northern Japan, around 2010, he said.

The Nikkei business daily reported earlier that Toyota will likely invest about $201-$301 million in the fifth domestic engine plant, with an annual production capacity of roughly 200 000 units.

The plant is expected to manufacture 1.5-liter-class engines to be used in subcompact sedans and other small vehicles, whose demand has been increasing worldwide amid higher fuel prices, the paper said.
