It may look like a design rendering, but Merc’s F-CELL is the actual handiwork of 150 three-pointed star trainees.

A year in the making, the F-CELL fuses Merc’s original 1886 patent car proportions (and wheels) with futuristic drivetrain technology.

Scissor pods (they're not really doors now are they?) are beyond cool.

The project aim was to facilitate a working environment where future Mercedes-Benz designers and engineers could get a feel for both the company’s heritage (significant) and fuel-cell (even more significant) powered future.

Although it may look awfully odd, there is some very clever thinking incorporated, including carbon-fibre bucket seats and nosecone (based on the company’s F1 cars) and a drive-by-wire joystick control (replacing the steering wheel).

Powering the F-CELL Roadster is a 1.2kW hybrid fuel cell, which enables a Labrador like top speed of only 25km/h, yet counters with 350km of range. Though performance is much in line with 19th century motoring, the execution is quite beguiling.
