As hot hatches go, the sophisticated and stylish S3 is plenty good. Would be neat with 280kW though, wouldn’t it?

Former Audi powertrain engineer Roland Mayer has a well rounded performance upgrade for S3 owners, manufacturered to typically bespoke German aftermarket tuning standards by his company MTM.

As an engine specialist – working on the legendary 2.2-litre five cylinder Quattro engines of the 1980s – Mayer has an innate ability to extact nearly unimaginible amounts of power from Ingolstadt badged products without sacrificing driveability completely.

Ballistic four-pot power

In S3 8P guise Mayer has messed about with the engine ECU unit, turbocharger and added a handmade stainless steel exhaust system which improves flow rates markedly with the new exhaust manifold. The net result is a stupefying 85kW boost in power from 195kW to 280kW, and a revised torque peak of 450Nm.

Beyond the epic performance credentials – like its unsettling 279km/h top speed - Mayer’s engineering credentials are to be seen in the balanced nature of the S3 8P conversion.

Balanced package

All spectres of dynamic performance have been engaged to ensure a balanced package. Deceleration is courtesy of 380mm Brembo sourced discs and eight-pot calliper stoppers.

Handling and straight line stability is improved thanks to a 45mm suspension lowering and 225/35 Sportcont Continental rubber rolling on bespoke, diamond cut 19-inch MTM Bimoto mags.

In rather uncharacteristic fashion the S3 8P does without garish body kit trimmings and embarrassing spoilers endemic to the German aftermaket tuning scene. The attractive S3 shape remains relatively unmolested; not that you’d recognise a MTM fettled S3 8P anyhow – they travel a bit faster than your visual recognition field is used to…
