Toyota announced that it would reproduce replacement parts for its 2000GT. Launched in 1967 through a collaboration with Yamaha, the car had a production-run of three years, in which 337 units were produced for a global audience.

At the time, the 2000GT made use of a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, magnesium alloy wheels, and retractable headlamps. Apart from these features, it had a top speed of 220km/h, which puts it on par with some of today's cars.

Sales to customers only

Now, though, Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), Toyota's motorsport division, announced that it would produce the replacement parts as mentioned above as part of the GR Heritage Parts Project. It will be sold both locally and abroad. The 2000GT joins the A70 and A80 Supra models to benefit from this initiative.

These reproduced parts can be purchased from Toyota dealers in the same way as modern parts. However, there is a catch.

Toyota says: "Due to the uniqueness of the Toyota 2000GT, sales will be restricted to owners, to prevent reselling; and the number of parts sold will be limited per car."

The replicated parts are for the five-speed manual transmission. These include transmission-related Gears, synchro hub and sleeve, gaskets and oil seal kit, bearing kit, snap ring kit, thrust washer, shift fork, Differential-related Final gear kit, and ring gear set bolt.

On the local front, Toyota South Africa Motors has embarked on a 360-degree restoration of its own 2000GT heritage vehicle in and will be documenting this process.
