SPIED: Mini’s four-door future

There was a time when Mini really stood for mini with two doors but, since the addition of larger models such as the Clubman and Countryman, this is no longer the case.

Since BMW got its hands on the British automaker and churned out the first modern Mini in 2000, the automaker's range has been constantly expanding.

MORE PRACTICAL, LONGER WHEELBASE

A four-door Cooper prototype was recently spotted undergoing testing.

The four-door, third-generation hatchback, should make its debut with the traditional two-door model later in 2013.

Both models ride on the BMW Group's newly developed front and all-wheel drive UKL1 modular platform that will also be the base for the 1 Series Gran Turismo compact MPV.

Our images suggest that the more practical four-door model will have a slightly longer wheelbase and smaller front doors than the two-door.

The engine options will be shared between the two body styles and will include a new family of turbocharged three-cylinder petrol and diesel units, with the sportier Cooper S and JCW versions to be powered by the four-cylinder engines.

A convertible model is also in the works and could be launched in 2014.
