Bullet for Hillcrest hijacker

DURBAN - A hijacker has been shot dead by police in Hillcrest, near Durban.

A police spokesman said police were told of a hijacking around 7.30pm on Tuesday (Aug 6, 2013) and later say saw a car fitting the stolen vehicle's description.

"When the police attempted to pull over the vehicle the suspects sped off ," the spokesman reproted. "The police chased them. As the suspects were fleeing they lost control of the vehicle and crashed. They then opened fire at the police and police returned fire."

'THUGS STOPPED'

One of the men in the car was shot dead, two others escaped.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the "swift reaction" by police. "Had they not stopped these thugs in their tracks they would have caused further harm to innocent members of the community."
