JOHANNESBURG - Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius bought himself a McLaren supercar as a Christmas gift for successful year, the Sunday Times reported.
"I drive a McLaren - a gift I got for myself for this Christmas and the next one," he said.
The topless 12C Spider reportedly sells for more than R3.5-million. Pistorius said the car was to spoil himself for a "good year".
'I GREW UP AS A PETROL HEAD'
Pistorius, who competed in both the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, was invited to the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in England, where he saw first-hand how our Formula 1 cars and the automaker's MP4-12C and 12C Spider road cars are built.
He said: “There are people here (at the MTC) who are among the most advanced minds in the automotive industry.
“I grew up as a petrol head so to be here is very special. For me, F1 is all about high technology. I could stand and stare at all the different bits of the car forever.”
He became the first double leg-amputee to participate in the Olympics in London in 2012. He also participated in the Paralympics, winning gold in the men's 40m and 4×100m relay.
