WATCH | The mighty 'Godzilla' remains one of Nissan's most iconic performance cars

Mention the word 'Godzilla' to anyone other than a petrol head and they will likely think of the 1998 movie with the same name.

A petrol head's thought-train however, works very much differently where a different beast comes to mind - the Nissan Skyline GTR.

One of the most iconic

It was during the 90's when Japanese automotion was at its highest ebb with the likes of the Toyota Supra, Mazda RX-7 and Honda NSX getting right in the face of what other manufacturers had to offer.

Earlier iterations of GTR went by various other names including 'Kenmeri' and 'Hakosuka' in the late 60's to early 70's, unfortunately though, production was ceased in 1973 and remain in hiatus.

But it was in 1989 when the GT-R nameplate was revived again, slowly getting the ball in motion for the creation of the iconic examples we know and love today.

South Africa was never blessed with previous generations, with many resorting to the more expensive importing route, but it was in 2008 when the Nissan GTR was officially sold locally.

The current R35 model does not form part of the Skyline name and serves as Nissan's luxury sport performance car.
