WATCH | Ride along in the new Porsche Turbo S

Forty-five years ago, Porsche introduced the 930 Turbo to the world, and sports cars have not been the same since.

Using it's Porsche code name, 930, this model featured a massive wing that would be known as the 'whale tail'. Its wheel archers were blistered to fit the 205/50, and 225/50 Pirelli P7 tyres and the power came from a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the first production turbo motor fitted to a Porsche.

According to the FIA's rules, if 400 models were produced it meant could race in the Group 4 competition under the 934 name.

It competed in the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans and had many battles with another great German homologated sport scar, the BMW 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile'. 

In 2020, Stuttgart recently unveiled the latest iteration of its 'normal' 911 models. The Turbo S is the flagship of the 992 range for now. It's powered by a new 3.8-litre boxer engine with two VTG turbochargers, delivering 478, 51kW. The impressively high numbers don't stop there with 800Nm of torque, an increase of 50Nm. 

The Turbo-specific eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) cuts the sprint from 0 to 100km/h to 2.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster and top speed is pegged at a dizzying 330km/h.

You'll notice the 992 model still has defining features like the flared wheel arches and 'whale tail'.

It's incredible to see how the Turbo nameplate has come in 45 years; there's no denying that it remains one of the pure sportscars.
