Over the next couple of years, South Africa will see an influx of electric vehicles to our market.

Several automakers have already expressed great interest in launching the new batch of vehicles locally, following in BMW and Jaguar's footsteps.

These two automakers are the only ones to have all-electric cars on sale in Mzansi, but the impending arrival of rival products will be immensely beneficial to the market.

What we can expect

In due course, South Africa will receive some, if not all, of the following vehicles.

Volkswagen is one of the biggest automakers in the world and has put itself at the forefront of electrification and embracing the 'green' future. In South Africa, the automaker has a set of Golf 7.5 e-Golfs (electric Golfs) doing the rounds; testing the market's uptake of electric mobility.

The market's reaction to the e-Golf will go a long way as to when the ID.3 will go on sale locally. While VW has made it clear that the ID.3 is earmarked for our market, pricing is yet to be confirmed.

BMW's i3 currently is the only electric vehicle the automaker sells in SA after the discontinuation of the i8. If everything goes according to plan, BMW will launch its new ix3 to do duty alongside the i3. This new vehicle is the first 'x' BMW to receive the electric treatment and can charge its battery from 0 - 80% in around 34 minutes (under perfect conditions).

Other cars that will make their debut in other parts of the world include the Lexus UX300e, Audi E-Tron, and Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. Volvo is no stranger to going green and has a hybrid model in every one of its ranges, but the XC40 Recharge P8 is the first of its vehicles to adopt the all-electric jacket.
